The Mayhems have proposed two panels to 2013 SXSW. They are worth checking out, and worth voting for!
In case you haven’t heard, SXSW (or “South by Southwest” to the uninitiated) is a yearly mega-conference in Austin, TX which brings out the best and the brightest (and all the rest, too) from indie film, music, and interactive technology. It is so large and so broad that it’s tough to even figure out what it’s about. Over the course of a week every year, Austin is overrun by artists both aspiring and established, silicon valley startup hopefuls and veterans, and even a few business minded perverts to share new ideas and showcase innovations. There are panels, workshops, powerpoint presentations, hands on classes, parties, shows, screenings, and sex. And we’re fixin’ to throw some Mayhem into the mix.
Of course, given that this conference is the biggest thing to roll into Texas since NASCAR, everybody and their parents want to present there. Before securing a spot on stage, prospective presentations must be screened through the court of popular opinion. That means we need your votes to get out there and tell the world about DIY porn and sex science!
About the proposed panels:
Porn prohibitionists assert that pornography is inherently destructive for both the performer and the viewer. Yet some studies suggest that with decreased institutionalized sexism in a society comes increased variety of pornographic imagery available and the increase of positive limpact on relationships. In the age of internet video and conscientious consumption, independent porn is getting a leg up- direct access to consumers is increasing questions about how work standards being applied to the world of XXX.
Aside from ourselves, this proposal has some seriously first rate panelists on board and ready to talk about this issue. Shine Louise Houston, Kitty Stryker, and Kelly Shibari will join us to talk about how the DIY community can shape the future of the pornography industry in terms of legislation, business, and labor rights.
The PSIgasm Project is an open source hardware project aiming to create sophisticated, inexpensive DIY tools to record physiological data about the human sexual response. We cast custom silicone inserts embedded with sensors to monitor pressure, temperature, heat flow, and blood volume density. This data is streamed wirelessly to a computer and displayed in real time. I haven’t had the time or money to move this project forward in a while, so a boost from SXSW could make the difference between a successful open source project and a good idea that never gets off the ground. Check out this video if you’re not convinced that this is awesome.
